The idea of electric flight has been around for decades, but only recently has it started to take off. At least 20 companies are developing air taxi plans, including traditional aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus, as well as Uber. Nearly all promise to build battery-electric aircraft to eliminate the noise and pollution typically associated with helicopters and jets.
But flying requires a lot of energy, and currently, batteries are too heavy and expensive to achieve liftoff. The battery technology used in Tesla Model 3 or Chevrolet electric vehicles is not enough to power more than a two-seat aircraft, and their flight range is limited to a few miles. Energy density is a key metric, and today's batteries don't have enough energy to lift most aircraft off the ground. Jet fuel currently provides us with 43 times more energy than batteries of the same weight.
Battery energy density can increase by 5% to 8% per year. To get batteries to a place where they make sense in small sizes, they need to achieve five times their current density. At the current pace of battery and electric engine technology, commercial use of hybrid electric technology won't be possible until 2030.
