Recently, CICEnergiGUNE, a Spanish research center for energy storage technology, led the development of a high-performance green redox flow battery (Higreew) research project to produce cheap and efficient redox organic flow batteries.

It is reported that the project is funded by the European Commission with 3.8 million euros and includes scientists from European universities such as the Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of Bohemia, as well as Czech redox battery expert Pinflow and electrochemical equipment supplier C- Tech etc.

The new battery will be based on water-soluble organic electrolytes. The scientists say the battery electrolyte is low-cost and compatible with optimized low-resistance membranes and fast electrode kinetics. The new technology will allow researchers to develop greener and more sustainable redox flow batteries with higher power and energy density while providing longer service life.

According to reports, the researchers' goal is to control energy storage costs below 0.10 euros/kWh/cycle by the end of the 40-month project that started last month; and to control energy storage costs to 0.5 euros by 2030. /kWh/cycle or less.

Later in the research, the batteries will be tested at the Gamesa factory in Spain. Scientists say the project aims to prove that organic flow batteries can become a sustainable alternative to vanadium batteries. Vanadium batteries are one of the key raw materials listed by the European Commission.

Additionally, unlike vanadium redox flow batteries, such devices are more environmentally friendly because they contain no heavy metals or harmful acids.
