On December 8, local time, QuantumScape, a startup backed by Volkswagen and Bill Gates, announced the amazing performance data of its latest solid-state battery. It is said to increase the cruising range of electric vehicles by 80% and can charge 80% of the battery in 15 minutes.

During a virtual "Battery Day" event for investors, the recently public company announced that its solid-state batteries for electric vehicles will charge faster, have greater capacity and last longer than traditional EV batteries. It could also be the first commercially viable solid-state battery. While most startups working on solid-state batteries are still in the product development stage, QuantumScape says it will enter production in 2024.

Affected by the news, QuantumScape's stock price closed up more than 30% yesterday, and also rose 20.21% to $69.6 in after-hours trading.

In fact, most electric car companies have been using "wet" lithium-ion batteries for decades, which use liquid electrolytes to move energy. They charge relatively slowly, can freeze in subzero temperatures, and contain flammable materials that can be dangerous in the event of a crash.

But the solid-state batteries developed by QuantumScape are significantly improved compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries: not only can they increase the range of electric vehicles by 80%, but they can also charge much faster (in 15 minutes) It usually takes 40 minutes or more to charge a lithium-ion battery to 80% capacity), and it can still maintain more than 80% of its capacity without deterioration after 800 charges.

In addition, they are non-combustible and have a volumetric energy density of over 1,000 watt-hours per liter, which is almost twice the density of excellent commercial lithium-ion battery packs and four times the density of the batteries currently used in Tesla’s Model 3. By weight, it can supply 380 to 500 Wh/kg of energy, compared to the current Tesla battery of approximately 260 Wh/kg.

It is understood that the key to all breakthroughs in this battery is the use of ceramic separators to replace the liquid electrolytes used in traditional batteries. As a medium for the flow of positive and negative ions, this ceramic is flexible, not rigid. At extremely low temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius, energy can continue to move throughout the battery without affecting battery performance.

Stan Whittingham, the inventor of lithium-ion batteries and one of the winners of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, said, “The most difficult part of making a solid-state battery is to simultaneously meet the multiple requirements of high energy density, fast charging, long cycle life and wide temperature range operation. "The data shows that QuantumScape's solid-state battery fully meets all of these requirements, which has never been reported before. If the company can bring this technology into mass production, it has the potential to transform the entire industry."
